In most cases, simply standing at ground level and looking at your roof is always a good start, however even checking whether your gutters are clear on a two storey house can be difficult without climbing a ladder.
Three story houses with hidden gullies and flat roofs require extended ladders and even expensive scaffolding to gain access for a simple inspection
Quite a few rogue traders will inform you that the whole roof needs replacing without you having the opportunity to inspect it for yourself.
